After he loses half his assets, he's going to get stuck paying alimony, legal costs for his son's criminal case, legal costs for divorce, and legal costs for a civil suit. The real kicker is that if his son doesn't hit 18 before this stuff works it's way through the courts, he'll be paying for the mistakes made by a son he won't have custody over, and probably paying child support on top of it.
